Harry Reid has once again demonstrated that the Democrats are betting the farm on defeat. Not that it comes as a surprise, after all defeatism is their stock in trade. Their long history of wanting to lose can be traced all the way back to the American Revolution. They weren't called democrats then but the party line hasn't changed much since.
They were called "Loyalists" who decried the popular will of the majority wanting freedom from the Mother Country. Along with aiding and abetting the Red Coats, their policy then as now was inflammatory to say the least. It seems they were proven wrong in the light of history. The birth of the United States succeded against all odds and came to the rescue of the Mother Country more than once.
During the American Civil War, or the War of Northern Aggression if you like, the Democrats once again were willing to buy into defeat and allow the south to go their own way. During Lincoln's second term it was the Little Napoleon McClellan who was their front man for cut and run. Lest we forget the truly horrific casualties incurred during the Civil War you might want to compare them with the casualty lists from Iraq.
When World War One broke out, Woodrow "Woodhead" Wilson promised to keep America out of the war. Not surprising as he was a dedicated pacifist and an academic to boot. When the pressure got too much and he finally asked for a declaration of war he admitted being clueless as to why the soldiers he was sending off to die were so enthusiastic. Not surprising is it?
When Woodhead went to Paris with his 14 points, the Europeans wanted nothing to do with them. The Europeans are every bit as tribal as the Sunni ans Shia in Iraq. And the forerunner of the useless United Nations, the League of Nations proved to be as toothless and ineffective as that blight on New York soil the current UN.
I guess Harry doesn't read much history or if he does he draws the same conclusions as the other dimwits in his party. Franklin Roosevelt wanted desperately to get into the act and stop Nazi aggression in Europe a worthy cause indeed. It was his fellow democrat the secretary of state Cordell Hull who in a series of blunders that presages the same errors currently shared by his democratic fellows stated "Gentlemen do not read each others mail."
Hull was talking about the American Black Chamber who cracked several diplomatic codes allowing us some insight into what our earstwhile allies were thinking and more importantly reporting to their heads of state. Shades of the NSA scrap! Hull was largely responsible for the arrogant and short sighted diplomatic contretemps that led to Pearl Harbor.
I guess Harry has never heard of the Marshall Doctrine either. It was that little rebuilding effort that set Europe back on their feet after the second world war. Hey Harry last time I looked we're still in Germany! Oh and Harry we're still in Korea too, courtesy of another Democrat president who at least had the vision to recognize the threat posed by the peace loving Soviet Union.
Which brings us to the Dem's favorite conflict of all time, the one they were instrumental in helping to lose. Vietnam. I was there Harry, where were you? The problem with micromanagment Harry is that if your not clued in to what's going on at the sharp end of the stick your essentially clueless. Oh yeah there's one other minor thing Harry. You have go into it TO WIN!
I've taken the long way round to get here so bear with me. We're still in Europe and Korea and we've spent untold billions in both sides of the world due largely to tribalism. Hey Harry the whole world is tribal. We carried the burden of the defense of Europe for half a century Harry and know what? Most of them are grateful that the Soviets didn't come crashing through the Fulda Gap. You wouldn't know anything about that right Harry? Too busy making land deals.
The point is Harry. If we win the war in Iraq, and militarily we have, and lose the peace, it's not likely that the Islamo nut cases are going to bomb podunk Nevada so your probably safe. But it's going to be your and your ilk who have to explain to the grieving familes of the next attack on American soil that is was the lack of will to win the peace that prompted it.
